The discovery of the water drops was a blessed accident for Kim. He was inspired with the idea while spraying water onto his works and saw the water drops glittering in the sunlight. However, it was during the winter of 1972-1973 that the actual water drop art was born. Kim, then, devoted himself to the creation of a new organic form and similar representations by reducing the use of bright colors. The water drops are luminous and sharply defined, and appear deceptively wet and real; the beauty of the water drop painting is that they deceive the eye. His water drops are derived from hyper-realism, a trend that was widespread in the world around that time.
